YAY!!!

We ROCKED our presentation. I'm kinda glad that both of the owners came becasue if the husband hadn't come, we probably wouldn't have made as much preogress. All in all, i think we rocked it, and that's about it. I'll let you know more later!

GUESS WHAT!!!???

Today we are meeting with the administrator and i guess you would call him the buisness manager of our school. Basically, they are the couple that owns the school. WE are going ot meet at 11:30 and right now it is 10:15, so about an hour and 15 minutes from now, they will be in our sclassroom and we will be telling them what we found out about recycling. I guees i will come back later today and let you know how it went!

Our argument!!!!!

Ok, so we are totally on the ball here! We are working on our argument to prove to administration that we need recycling. oh, and I also found our school's footprint. And guess what it is. 23 out of 25!!!!! THAT IS REALLY BAD!!! But, on the bright side, we have just about everything we need to prove our point! YAY!

YAY!!!!!

So, we just finished up our presentation with the sales rep. for the recycling company and it was really cool. I think I'm gonna do a question of the day about it now...
Q: What did you like the most about the recycling presentation?
Scarlet: "We now have and idea about what we can do, and how we need to do it, and how it's going to effect our school, in a good way."
Mrs. Frizzle: "That we were doing a lot of the things that she had suggested."
Candy: "The free pencils and the information."
Audrey: taking test, i'll come back to her
Alice: "I liked that she answered all of our questions and that the trucks can be fexible when they pick up."
Marie: "All of the tips she gave us about what we should do next."
Michael: "It was useful information and that we can learn from it like new stuff that's recyclable."
Alyssa: "I thought that it was useful information and it will really help us."
Callie: Callie was not here for our presentation. =(

She told us all kinds of cool stuff, like what we need to do in order to get the office to go along with it and about litterless lunches and about a whole bunch of things that are recyclable that we thought weren't, and in other words: IT ROCKED!

So, here's what happened...

We did our presentation to the administrator yesterday and things didn't go too bad, but they weren't awsome either. She says that she's "all for it" but the problem is, she doesn't want all this stuff sitting areound because it doesn't look good. We are trying to figure that out, but the thing is we can't really do anything major without her aprovall (sp?) and so far, we haven't gotten any. We have the money, it's just that we can't get premission to do anything from her and that's whay the recycling just sits around. We don't ahve anywhere to put it and we won't until she lets up but big recycling bins.
PS Sorry, my server is all messed up and I can't click the color button 'cause it isn't there. AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Ok! We finished the board yesterday and we a re going to start presentations for all the classes and administration! Yay! Wish us luck!

Thursday, October 23, 2008

Right now.....

So, right now, with our recycling project, we just have to put our board and report together and we will be done.
One last question: Q: Tell me one thing you learned while doing this project.
Callie: "Recycling is very important to our lives and to the earth to make it green friendly."
Scarlett: "Recycling makes our world better."
Candy: "Recycling is fun."
Audrey: "Trash is yucky."
Michael: "Recylcling is good but the trash was nasty."
Alice: "It was very interesting."
Marie: "There are seven different kinds of plastic."
Alyssa: "I learned how to make a blog."
Sorry! I can't catch Mrs. Frizzle. SHe has been in lessons all morning and i cna't interupt. (sp?)
I'll post her answer as soon as I catch her. (: P)

Where we are right now

Right now, we are working on our presentation to prove to the principle that we need recycling. We have a recycling bin in our classroom; of course, it's just a trash can that we wrote "recycling" on. The janitor is not respecting our recycling project because he is just throwing away all the stuff in the recycling bin. We left him a note but I don't know if he listened.
It just occured to me that I haven't said anything about ewaste yet. Ewaste is electronic waste. Ewaste is electronic devices that have a circuit (sp?) board. Circuit boards have gold in them as weel as other valuable metals.
So, this is Marie, signing off again!

November 15

Guess What People!? November 15 is National Recycling Day!
You know, recycling is a good thing. Paper can be recyled up to 11 times. (I don't know whose job that is, you know, counting how many times paper has been recycled, but I don't want it.)
We went to Keep Norfolk Beautiful last week, and it was fun. They had solar panels, and solar tubes, and recycled carpet and linoleum. They had a water garden ('cause it floods.) and a battery recycling box. That's pretty cool, don't you think?
Remember: Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle.

Yesterday was our last trash sorting day.....

So, yesterday was our last day sorting trash.  It was kinda' gross.  We watched a movie yesterday and since we didn't have popcorn so we ate what was left of a bag of pretzels.  (About Half)  So that was there, so was a lump of jello.  YUCK!  I don't know what any of the other groups found, but that was what Alyssa and I found.  In the end, our result for percent of recyclables and compost that we throw away is: (drum roll)50%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We were kind of off (we thought that there would be 65% insted of 50%)  But we still have enough evidence (well, I think) to get recyling bins.

What it's like sorting trash at our school

Personally, I think some of the trash we find at our school is pretty gross. The other day, someone found a chicken bone. Ine of our tarps is covered in pasta sauce. In Middle School, we find a lot of tissues because almost every one has had a stuffed up nose lately. Yesterday, we had a really high average percent (for Children's house 1) of 99%. Our total average for the day was only about 40% though.

Question of the Day #7

Q: Which classroom produces the least amount of trash per student?
Answers: Michael: Ann's room (Non-nappers room)
Alyssa: Children's hour 3
Callie: Todler room
Mrs. Frizzle: Children's house 3
Audrey: Lower Elementary
Alice: Upper Elementary
Candy: Music Class
Marie: Children's house 3
Scarlett: Upper Elementary

Alyssa: 2 or 3
Callie: 3 or 4
Mrs. Frizzle: 6
Candy: 7
Alice: 7
Audrey: 6
Marie: 5

Did you know?

See, look, Earth is saying "Help Me!"  I was watching this show on tv. earlier and I found out some interesting stuff.  You know how Thomas Edison invented the incondescent (sp?) light bulb?  Turns out that his light bulb works just like a toaster. 90% of the energy produced by light bulbs is heat.

Each American uses 5 trees worth of paper in a year; and I mean big, tall trees, not little tiny ones.  American throw away 428,000 cell phones per day.  Americans throw away so much paper that we could stack sheets of paper on top of eachother to create a 12 foot tall wall that reaches 3,000 miles from New York City to Las Angeles.  That's 36,000 sheets per column.

And, we aren't just wasteful with natural resources liek paper and oil, it's also food.  think about how many animals are slaughtered to make food that we human beings buy but don't always eat beacause it "expires" before we get a chance to eat it. This country has a lot of problems liek obeisity.  If people stopped eating fast food in front of the tv., they could cook for themselves to create a healthier meal and then, they could watch tv. some other time and go on a walk of play with their family or friends.  (Unless of course, you don't have friends and you live alone...)

personally, I believ that their is one universall solution to all of our countries problems.  People could stop driving and walk, carpool, take the bus, or even ride yor bike.  Adding that excercise in with your daily commute to whearever you need to go might prevent you from becoming abeise; same with the drive-thru food.  If you stop eating it, you cuold eat at home instead and save gas money, and oil.  if you recycle paper, that is cutting down on our paper waste by 50%.  same thing with margins on typed documents.  If you reduce your margins to 1/2 an inch, that also save us paper.  Now, this si just my opinion...i'm not that kind of person that forces their opinions on someone else.  You don't have to listen to me...i'm just putting it out their.

xoxo, Marie

Ps: Sorry this post was so long.

Marie: 1,800 items
Mrs. Frizzle: 1,000

Alyssa: 6.5
Callie: 8.5

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

So, what we did today,

Today, we got to sort trash...whopee!  The trash I sorted smelled so bad, plus, when I got to the trash can all the lunch trash was in, it smelled so bad, I thinkalmost everyone in the room gagged a little bit.  I feel bad for some of the pairs that had bigger classrooms because it took them so much longer, but that gave my partner (Alyssa) and I some time to star figuring out the percents for the amounts of trash/recyclables we were throwing away each day.  Our total average for today was 44%.  we might be wrong! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!  GO GREEN TEEN TEAM/ GREEN TEEN TEAM TEACHER!

Question of the day #2

Q: What recyclabe item do you think we will find the most of when we are sorting trash today;and which class do you think will have the most of that item out of the four classes we are using? (We are using Children's House 1, Lower Elementary 1, Upper Elementary, and Middle School!)
A:Mrs. Frizzle: Paper, Middle School
Candy:Paper, Lower Elementary 1
Audrey: Paper, Children's House 1
Scarlett: Paper, Middle School
Michael: Paper, Middle School
Alyssa:Paper, Middle School
Alice: Paper, Lower Elementary
Marie: Paper, Lower Elementary 1
So, today we are going ot start sorting trash. We are going to sort today (Tuesday), tomorrow (Wednesday), next Monday and Tuesday, the Wednesday and Thursday of the following week and the Monday of the week after that. We are working in teams of 2 to sort all of the trash for the next few weeks even though we won't sort everyday.
PS: Sorry, Callie is out sick today. I'll get her answers from her when she gets back.
Love,
Mrs. Frizzle, Candy, Audrey, Alice, Marie, Scarlett, Alyssa, Callie, and Michael. <3

What we're gonna do today...

So, yesterday we decided that we are going to start sorting the trash in four of our nime classrooms at our school.  Michael and I worked on a tally sheet and Candy, Audrey, Alyssa and Michael found out about this school in Georgia with over 600 students that wen't down to using almost 30 trash bags per day to about 10 bags per day.  They added recycling and composting to their school and since we already have a composter, we need to get people to use it more.  We are sorting through the trash because our principle won't let us have recycling and the planet and envirnment is very important to my class and even if we can't get the recycling bins, we are still going to try and help reduce the amount of trash we are throwing away.

WE LOVE YOU! xoxo

Our newest idea!

OK! So, we were on this feild trip the other day.  We were doing a ropes course amd we were eating lunch in this pavillion, and we noticed that it had those new compact flourescent lightbulbs.  We think it might be a good isea to use thise in our school, since we are going to start digging throughout trash everyday soon to see what reyclabes we are thowing away.  Even though some of the school already has flourescent bulbs, most of it doesn't, so we figured that would be a good ides to put those in.  WOO!
